Apples and Fire

Dear Parents,

We used The Amazing Apple Peeler! again this week, twice. On Monday we made applesauce by heating up apples, a tiny bit of cinnamon, and a tiny bit of water. It was delicious. Everyone agreed and asked for more.

We prepared for our field trip to the fire station by making a list of what we expected to see there. The children recalled many things we have been reading about in our fire books. We talked about holding hands and walking with our grownups. The class was excited.

At the fire station we saw almost everything on our list: a fire truck, helmets, pants, jackets, a pole, a ladder, and firemen. We did not see a platform on top of the ladder, but wondered if it was on top of the fire truck, out of sight. The firemen told us that the most important thing to remember is to leave the building and don’t go back. Even if we forgot our favorite toy! Anyone who wanted to, got to sit in the fire truck.

Back at school we read Richard Scarry’s A Day at the Fire Station, and went into the big room to play. In the block area the children built a fire helicopter that had fire coming out. The jungle gym was a castle that was on fire for most of the big room play, and in the kitchen area, a friend said they were going for a bicycle ride because they were waiting for the cake to freeze. Never a dull moment.

The children told us they sang a butterfly song in yoga class. While half the class posed with Julieta, the rest of us read books and made a list of who lives in our homes.

We made apple pie on Thursday. There was a rare moment of silence when we first started eating it. Mmmmmm.

On Friday, we had our second family share. Kate and Jack, joined us during circle to read Jane’s favorite book, Roxaboxen, by Alice McLerran. We spent the rest of the morning beading necklaces, everyone worked carefully to choose one bead at a time. The class chatted about who would receive the beads, and which color came next in a pattern. Some people liked to choose all different beads.

Have a merry weekend,

Therese and Nicole
